The cost of food and the price of meals has gone up tremendously recently. The government is finding ways to help lessen the citizen's everyday burden and came up with the 1Malaysia People’s Menu. You could give these meals a try, from the looks of it, it sure looked delicious!

RESTAURANT owners in Penang have given the thumbs up to the 1Malaysia People’s Menu, with 61 operators taking part thus far and more signing up every day.

Restaurant owners said they have received good response from the people to this menu.

Nasi Kandar Ariff owner Ariff Abdul Rahman, who runs his shop in Air Itam, said he received overwhelming response from his customers since he started the 1Malaysia People’s Menu.

“I have about 20 customers every day who come just to enjoy the special rates this menu offers,” he said.

Ariff’s shop offers a plate of rice with fried fish for RM2, a plate of rice, vegetables, a fried chicken and half a boiled egg for RM3, and a plate of rice with a fried fish, vegetables and a fried egg for RM4.

Customers can also choose to add a rose syrup drink for RM1.

“I eat here about five times a week. The 1Malaysia People’s Menu has really helped me save a lot of money. It is affordable and I get to enjoy a nutritious meal,” he said.

On Wednesday, it was reported that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak visited Restoran Ukhwah in Lorong Medan Tuanku, Kuala Lumpur, which was one of the 1,004 restaurants nationwide that signed up for the programme.

Najib had wanted to taste the food served under the lunch menu and find out whether it was really of quality.

Owner of the Bee San coffeeshop in Air Itam, Penang, Toon Koon Ku also agreed that the IMalaysia People’s Menu drew a lot of good response from his customers.

“A lot of people have grabbed the opportunity to enjoy their breakfasts and lunches at a special low price,” said Toon.

His coffeeshop offers a choice of three sets for breakfast at RM2 and two sets for lunch at RM4.

For breakfast, customers can choose from a choice of coffee with toast and two half boiled eggs, coffee with bread and kaya, or coffee with nasi lemak.

For lunch, customers can choose from a choice of rice with chicken or fish, an egg, vegetables and a syrup drink.

Siti Muzalifa Jamaludin, who owns the Siti Muzalifa restaurant on Gat Lebuh China, also praised the 1Malaysia People’s Menu.

“It has been a hit among my customers, especially for breakfast where they can get a packet of nasi lemak and a cup of teh tarik for RM2,” said Siti.

For lunch, her restaurant offers rice with curry chicken, vegetables and a syrup drink for RM4.

Top One Cafe on Lebuh Pantai has also signed up for the 1Malaysia People’s Menu programme.

Its owner Murthy Kalimuthu said the programme was a good way to help the people ease their burden.

His shop offers beehoon and teh tarik for breakfast at RM2 and rice with fried fish or fried egg, vegetables and tofu for RM4.

Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry’s state price regulating officer Mohd Nurul Firdaus Ali said the nationwide programme began in June, and participating restaurants in Penang signed up from August.

“Since then, we have seen a growing interest among restaurant owners to join this programme,” he said when contacted.

He added that more restaurants should sign up as it is a good way to help the people have healthy and affordable meals. -- Star Metro North (1Malaysia People’s Menu)
