Terry Fox Run KL 2011

Terry Fox Run KL 2011 will be held on 13th November 2011.

Terry Fox Run for Cancer Research

This is 31st Anniversary of The Terry Fox Run. It is a milestone unimaginable without the support of so many people. There is so much to be done yet we must always celebrate our victories - of which there have been many.

Date: 13 Nov 2011, 09:00AM
Location: Padang Merbok, Jalan Parlimen, Kuala Lumpur
Distance: 3.6 km

This is a non-competitive family run event.

Information

Terry Fox knew personally, the importance of the need for cancer research. At the age of 18, he was told that his right leg had to be amputated above the knee as a result of bone cancer.

During this crucial period, Terry saw the intese pain and despair of other cancer victims and was deeply moved. In order to raise funds for cancer research, he decided to run across Canada asking for donations. This became "The Marathon of Hope".

Terry Fox died before he could complete his crusade, but his legacy is carried in the hearts of all wo participate or donated to the Terry Fox Run each year around the world.

How the Marathon of Hope began:

Since it began in 1983, the Terry Fox Run has become the largest, single-day, fund-raising event for cancer research. Here in KL, the organizers aim to continue the quest to keep Terry's dream alive.

This year with the support of sponsors and participants, we hope to raise both funds and awareness for cancer research here in Kuala Lumpur. The beneficiary in previous years and this year as well is the Cancer Research Initiatives Foundation (CARIF).

You too, can take up the quest so that Terry's dream of finding a cure for cancer can become a reality.

Cameron Highlands Destination

How time flies and now we are in the 4th quarter of 2009. I've been busy and finding a little less time to update the Cameron Highlands travel destination website. It's been fun and rewarding too. Basically this site is funded by the sponsors to help support the server cost plus travel, time and effort to put up articles with information as accurate as possible, though it is not always the case.

I still find myself not knowing certain things. When I first set out to do travel writing with this website about Cameron Highlands, I thought I would run out of things to write pretty soon. After several years on, I am still filling in the gaps! Boy, are there still so much more gaps to fill up!

Doing this Cameron Highlands travel destination, I get very interesting inquiries and meet very interesting people along the way. As they said, life is the journey, not a destination, and that seems to sum up what I'm trying to do here.

Recently I make a quick pass through to Cameron Highlands; well I had some time to spare, and decided to have a quick check on a few things. It turned out to be an interesting visit despite the short duration. I only have about two hours of running around Cameron Highlands.

Hope to write up the articles soon for more updates about Cameron Highlands tourism Malaysia travel destination. Yey!

Plan Your Own Vacation

The self-planned holiday
By LEONG SIOK HUI i-July-2006

So you want to trek the Himalayas, pedal around Ireland and kayak Halong Bay in Vietnam, but can’t find a Malaysian operator to help you plan the trip? LEONG SIOK HUI suggests D.I.Y.

After he reached the peak of Mt Kinabalu in 2002, Tan Ay Bing, 49, aspired to climb higher mountains.

He read about Mt Kilimanjaro (5,895m) in Tanzania and bought Lonely Planet’s Trekking in East Africa guidebook. During a travel fair, he stumbled upon a Malaysian travel operator who could plan this climb for him.

“My biggest constraint was time, and I thought it would be a hassle to plan the trip myself,” said the director of an engineering firm.

But when he arrived in Africa, Tan was transferred to three different agents before the actual trekking began. The Malaysian agent’s role was just to hook Tan up with these agents, and they each got a cut from the cost of the trip.

“I realised it would have been easier to plan my own trip, get to Moshi (the town nearest to the mountain base) and arrange for a trekking operator there,” said Tan, who also trekked to the Everest Base Camp (5,300m-plus) in 2004.

Tan forked out a hefty RM11,000-plus for his trip though most Kilimanjaro (self-planned) trips usually cost about RM6,000 to RM7,000, minus the safari excursion.

“What I really learned from the trip is that you can travel alone. Once you’re there, your fellow travellers are your best supporters,” said Tan who wasn’t used to independent travelling before.

“A lot of people want to make that first move (to independent travel), but they just need a push.”

Yes, independent travelling IS the way to go. It allows flexibility, freedom and even brings with it moments of serendipity.

Besides, planning a trip is half the adventure and can be fun.

When it rains, it really pours

The heavy rain did make it difficult to see the road. For several days it was terribly hot and humid. Doing any activites just tires oneself out. Even my pet cat, Casper just sleeps most of the time. Could't do much with the hot and humid climate. It felt like walking in a thick gravy of sorts and breathing the heavier density air seems like drowning in it.

Today, the dark clouds loom and before you know it. Kaboom comes the thunder and lightning, and the rain pours down like cats and dogs. Fortunately managed to move out from the office a tad faster while it was still light. But the trip back to the house was a total free wash for the car.

Wonder how TTDI Shah Alam would fare in this kind of heavy downpour. All the best to the residents, and hope the government can come up with some better drainage of the area.

Rain Jam

The Sek 19 Rohmans Circle is totally jammed up!Whenever rain falls the traffic condition in Petaling Jaya or Kuala Lumpur gets really bad. The worlds climate has gone crazy and it seems Malaysia is no different. February month should have been a pretty hot month and it is supposed to be without rain. Alas no, it is still hot but then it pours in the afternoon pretty much cats and dogs.

And when it happens around rush hour, that's it. The traffic goes to the dogs. One of the poor road design is the traffic circle. It should be consigned to the museum and should be done away and replaced with traffic lights system. But the MPPJ city council unfortunately still keeps them around. Traffic circle is fine if the traffic is light.

But when the traffic volume swells up during rush hour, the traffic circle just can't handle the situation. Every driver will attempt to enter the circle without giving much chance for other drivers to exit the circle. Results? A complete lockjam of the circle. Traffic grinds to halt. Nobody can get in, nobody can get out. Until somebody decides to play nice and let other cars out of the circle then the traffic would be able to move.

And that was the situation where I was caught in at the PJ section 19 aka Rohman's Circle while returning home from work yesterday. What would have been a ten minute drive in out through the circle became 40 minute ordeal with cars forcing their way in and out. This is when you would like to quickly get in and get out of the circle because the traffic just shuffle along at snails pace.

There's nothing much I could do but listen to music and grit my teeth and hope to get clear of the circle the fastest possible.

Rainy days and rush hour just don't mix well.(sigh!)

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year 2006!

Yep! With the ushering of the new year comes the extravagant display of fireworks! This year with the many new malls opening up around my suburban housing area, has made them compete aggresively for mall patrons.

Me and my wife just came back from Cameron Highlands and had to crawl through the terrible midnight revelry traffic jam to arrive home. While relaxing about at home, the sudden bang-bang soung of fireworks sure startled me. It even gave my pet cat a big panic as to 'what on earth is happening?' kind of look. He promptly ran off and hid himself somewhere in the house. Dogs were barking and I guess they were pretty scared too.

I quickly grab my camera and dash out of the house to have a better view of the fireworks. Sure enough the fireworks display was spectacular, and positioning myself on the crossroad at the end of the road I was able to view the fireworks display by two malls - 1-Utama and The Curve.

It was spectacular and many neighbours also came out of the house to view it too. Some even let off their own mini fireworks though it is nothing in comparison with what the two malls dished out.

I'm sure the KL Town must be totally jammed up if the traffic around my small area is any indication to go by. Not a good time to get stuck in the traffic to have a jolly good time to celebrate the new year. But I guess the youngsters who has nothing much to do will brave the awful traffic condition just to have a good time together with their friends.

The terrific fireworks display soon ended and with the handful of photos in my camera I headed back to my house. Took me awhile to find my pet cat hiding out under the TV by the Astro set. Well, what a way to usher in the new year for my cat. For me, it nice to have my dear wife around and I suppose my pet cat for company for the new year 2006!

So, Happy New Year 2006!
May all your dreams come true!

Merry Christmas (belated)!

The Curve Merry Christmas! Peace, joy and goodwill to all men! Build elaborate Christmas decoration in the shopping malls. Yes, I think the malls are really trying to outdo each other this Christmas. Especially 1-Utama and The Curve which are just practically next door to each other, vying for shoppers to come and witness the huge Christmas tree they put up.

1-Utama, new wing section.Well, I like them too. But the busy activities of the Church, work and web, I didn't get much of chance till after Christmas. So I guess blogging about them is kinda of late. Well, never mind. I still took plenty pictures. I enjoyed the decoration and so do many of the shoppers, all of which also brought along their cameras, posing here, there, this angle, that angle. The decoration is big! Had to stand a little way back to get the full picture.

The Dancers at MidValley MegamallThe shopping mall management also organized some shows too. Didn't really catch any except the MidValley Megamall. Very interesting costume. Cabaret style. Looks like the dancers enjoyed themselves too.

Winter Wonderland at MidValley Megamall The external of the malls too were very brightly decorated with lights too. No need to go to Singapore Orchard Road. Plenty of light decoration by the malls.

Ho-ho-ho, Santa Claus is here! And come New Year, there will be fireworks display by the various malls. After that? Chinese New Year! There will be the start of those dong-dong-chang-chang CNY songs! Non-stop festivities from November to January, eh?
