Flower power comes to Putrajaya
Thursday July 7, 2011

PUTRAJAYA: The combination of artificial limbs decorated with roses is Eric Wong's symbolism of compassion and love towards the less fortunate.

The Rotary Club of Bandar Sunway member decided to come up with the concept for the indoor flower show competition in conjunction with the fourth Putrajaya Flowers and Parks Festival (Putrajaya Floria 2011) which starts on Saturday.

“The design concept is a birth of new hope, giving hope that we provide for those who were unfortunate,” said Wong.

Wong said the design was to symbolise the club's iconic humanitarian projects, “Leg for Legless”.

The design has three big “eggs” made of 20kg of rattan strips with a few artificial legs and about 2,000 roses and 100 hydrangea adorning them.

Another eye-catching decoration is titled “Flower Tower” from Lee Flower Design Academy Sdn Bhd.

The academy's education director Kathy Ong said the roses are stringed together with other flowers to make the Malaysian flag, Jalur Gemilang, thus representing a multicultural Malaysia.

“It shows that with a bunch of single roses, we can make something beautiful to represent Malaysian unity,” she said.

Putrajaya Floria 2011 will open its doors to visitors from July 9 to 17. Admission is free.

Other daily highlights include night boat shows, where 14 boats parade along the Putrajaya lake, and a five-minute fireworks presentation.

Tuesday July 5, 2011

KUALA LUMPUR: The skies of Putrajaya will come alive with fireworks for nine nights beginning this Saturday.

The fireworks display is part of the 1Malaysia International Tourism Night Floral Parade 2011.

About 15 lit floral floats will also cruise along a 3km stretch of Putrajaya Lake.

Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen said the ministry-organised event, themed “Magic of the Night”, is expected to draw up to 700,000 visitors.

The parade will be held from 8.30pm to 10.30pm from July 9 to July 17.

The event will culminate in awards for for the best lit boat and best photography on the final night.

“This event will complement Floria Putrajaya Festival, a floral fest which will be held during the day. We will be featuring floral floats sponsored by companies and states, as well as from Brunei and Cambodia,” Dr Ng said at the Malaysia Tourism Centre here yesterday.

Dr Ng urged city folk not to allow street protests planned on the same day to hamper their enjoyment.

“Bring a mat and your families, and enjoy a beautiful night out picnicking (by the lake) surrounded by the beautiful scenes,” she said. -- The Star
